After a Break Up: What to Do & How to Heal
Going Through A Painful Break Up? How to Surround Yourself with Comfort
After a difficult breakup, one of the best ways to heal is to create an outer world that supports and nurtures the new, improved inner world you’re creating. Even though you probably don’t feel like getting out of bed, let alone building a new environment, the best method is to start with small, manageable projects. Creating a new, inner world can be daunting. As you begin the work of healing your heart and starting fresh, it can be very helpful to change your surroundings. As you let go of the relationship, let go of the external scenery that harbors memories of the past.
An easy place to start is to paint your bedroom.
Just getting out of the house to collect color swatches will switch your focus away from your recent troubles. Choose a color that symbolizes the new direction you’re taking in your life. Make it personally meaningful. Spend some time on the internet looking up the psychological effects of color. Choose a color that supports the mood you want to create. If you want more stimulation, consider a shade of red. If you’re seeking tranquility, consider blue. Green brings to mind spring and fresh beginnings. As you evaluate colors, think about breaking out of familiar patterns. Reach for something new and inspiring.
If money permits, you might want to invest in new bedding. Again, think about new colors and patterns that inspire you. You don’t have to get rid of everything, just change things enough to reflect this brand new, exciting course your life is taking.
If there are rooms and/or furniture that remind you of your ex, you may want to give them a facelift as well. Send his favorite chair to a consignment shop and use the money to splurge on yourself.
Consider changing the function of a room. Switch the bedrooms around.
This is also a great time to de-clutter and organize. Throw out any items that remind you of your ex. Use this time to create an environment that’s truly nurturing. If you don’t have a lot of money to spend, have a yard sale and get rid of anything you don’t really need. Create space for your new life to fill.
If the weather is suitable, create a soothing space for outdoor living. Plant flowers. Create a seating area where you can read and reflect. Engage the senses. Think about the new memories you’ll be creating. Add wind chimes, scented roses, or a fountain. Create a vacation oasis just outside the door.
As you accomplish new projects, your mood will transform and your self esteem will rise. You will discover parts of yourself you never knew existed. Honor this time and surround yourself with hope and promise.
