After a Break Up: What to Do & How to Heal
How to Keep Yourself Together After a Difficult Break Up
After a break up, you will find yourself facing one of the hardest experiences life can offer. It is often more difficult if you’re the one who has been broken up with.

Whether the relationship was long term or short term, the pain is the same.

Missing someone is heartbreaking when they’re suddenly out of your life. Even though they may be physically absent, they’re still in your thoughts. Our survival instincts push us toward withdrawal. We often feel the only answer is to hide away until the hurt disappears.

This is probably the worst time to be alone. To start feeling better, it’s important to turn to your friends, your favorite activities, or a professional counselor for advice and comfort. The important thing is to reach out. Wallowing in sadness will not make you feel better.

Even though it’s the last thing you feel like doing, it’s important to get busy. Keep yourself active in things that improve your mood. Don’t give up on hobbies, special interests, or just getting out of the house. If you like to jog, do a little more of it. If you like shopping or antiquing, plan a special outing. Head to the book store or library.

Keep yourself moving, growing, and looking forward. This could be the perfect time to clean out the garage or organize your home office. Small steps and accomplishments will help you move through the haze of negativity. Ask yourself if there’s some kind of volunteer work you could be doing. Helping others in some tangible way can move the spotlight away from your own trouble. Nearly every town has an animal shelter or food bank that could use some extra help. You’ll be learning new things and meeting new people. A fresh change of scenery is always beneficial.

Pick up the phone. Call your friends and catch up on their lives. It’s amazing what a few hours of good company can do to lift your spirits. Go see a funny movie together. Contact that friend who is a good listener. Talk through your feelings. Most importantly, let your friends know you need their support.

Finally, it’s time to pamper yourself. Is there something you’ve wanted to do for a long time? Is there a vacation or affordable purchase you’ve been putting off? Don’t be afraid to indulge yourself a little. It’s time to make your needs the first priority. The main lesson here is taking good care of yourself. Remember you’re worth it.
